On October 2, 2017, a grand medal presentation parade was held at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan(UNMISS) to award UN medals to all ranks of the 3rd Chinese Peacekeeping Infantry Battalion(CHNBATT). H.E. Moustapha Soumaré, Acting SRSG, H.E. He Xiangdong, Chinese Ambassador to South Sudan, Lt. Gen. Frank Mushyo Kamanzi, Force Commander of UNMISS and senior colonel Lin Wei, Military Attaché of the Embassy of China in South Sudan, were present at the ceremony.

Ambassador He extended his warm congratulations to the Chinese men and women in uniform who were awarded the great honor. He said that since the deployment of the 3rd CHNBATT last December, they have always born in mind their mission, tackled difficulties and hardships, and advanced in a pioneering spirit. They properly grappled with the complicated and grave security situation in mission area and accomplished various missions assigned by UNMISS. All such efforts have brought into full play the good image of both UN peacekeepers and Chinese army, and made active contributions to promoting peace in South Sudan and the friendship between the peoples of South Sudan and China. “China is firmly committed to safeguarding world peace and security, and is ready to make further contribution to UN peacekeeping missions,” Ambassador He stressed.

On behalf of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Mr. Soumaré expressed his gratitude to China for its important contribution to UN peacekeeping operations. He said that since its deployment in South Sudan, with its professional competence and dedication, the 3rd CHNBATT has completed various tasks, including guarding UN house, POC sites and UN high level officials, as well as long-distance patrols, making significant contribution to the peace and stability of South Sudan.“Since 1990, China has contributed a total of over 30,000 peacekeepers to 24 UN peacekeeping missions. At present, China is the second largest financial contributor to UN peacekeeping operations, and send the most peacekeepers among the permanent members of UN Security Council. China has fully demonstrated its image as a responsible power by actively participating in UN peacekeeping operations,” Mr. Soumaré pointed out.

After the medal parade, a performance of military training and an exhibition on China’s development achievements were presented to the guests.
