China donated anti-malaria drugs and cash to South Sudan

On July 5th, 2018, the signing ceremony of the exchanged letters on anti-malaria drugs and cash donation between the Governments of China and South Sudan was held in Juba. H.E. He Xiangdong, Chinese Ambassador to South Sudan, Hon. Baak V.A. Wol, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of South Sudan signed the exchanged letter. Mr. Cai Senming, Economic and Commercial Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy, Hon. Makur Kariom, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Ministry of Health were present at the ceremony.

According to the exchanged letters, the Chinese Government will provide 1.5 million USD cash donation and a batch of anti-malaria drugs valued 5 million RMB Yuan to the South Sudanese Government. The cash and drugs will be used to help the South Sudanese Government to strengthen the ability to prevent and control epidemic diseases, such as malaria and rift valley fever, treat patients timely and improve the public health service.

Since the independence of the Republic of South Sudan, the Chinese Government continuously donated medicines and cash to the South Sudanese health sector. In 2017, the Chinese Government provided the South Sudanese Government with a batch of anti-malaria drugs valued 5 million RMB Yuan and 1 million US Dollars cash donation to eradicate cholera, and another 20 million RMB Yuan worth of medical supplies.

China has been continuously providing other support to the health sector of South Sudan. China has already sent 6 batches of medical team to South Sudan. China-aided Project of Modernization and Expansion of Juba Teaching Hospital and the Project of Housing for Experts and Staff at Kiir Mayardit Women’s Hospital in Rumbek are under implementation.

China attaches great importance to the bilateral friendly cooperation with South Sudan and will continue, within its capacity, providing strong support to South Sudan in humanitarian aid, state-building and social-economic development.
