Dr. Riek Gai Kok, Minister of Health, Mr. Zhang Yi, Economic and Commercial Counsellor of the Embassy and senior officials from the Ministry of Health were present at the ceremony.

Ambassador He said that cooperation in health sector is an important part of the friendly cooperative relations between China and South Sudan. In recent years, bilateral cooperation in health sector has developed rapidly and achieved fruitful results and China will continue to help South Sudan strengthen its capacity of medical services.

On behalf of the SPLM and the South Sudanese government, Acting Secretary General Jemma Nunu Kumba thanked China for its long-term support to South Sudan in the area of health. She said that SPLM sincerely wants to learn from the experience of Communist Party of China in governing the country in economic, health and other fields. As South Sudan’s medical and health care is lagging behind, its maternal and infant mortality rate is extremely high and epidemics including malaria, typhoid fever, tuberculosis and AIDS are prevalent. China has trained a large number of medical personnel for South Sudan through government scholarships and personnel training. This batch of medical supplies provided by China will surely help enhance the medical care and improve people’s livelihood in South Sudan.

Minister Riek Gai said that China’s successful promotion of rural health system in the 1970s provides a model for South Sudan’s ongoing “Boma Health Initiative”. South Sudan wishes to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China in health sector and benefit from China’s experience. This batch of medical supplies is another demonstration of the profound friendship between China and South Sudan. The minister promised to allocate them to the rural medical centers as soon as possible and make the best use of them.

The 24 containers of medical supplies mainly include surgical clothes, medical equipment and instruments, communication devices, and other tools and supplies for health workers at grass root level. The total value amounts to around 3 million US dollars.
